At GEMS Wantage Primary Academy, PE is an extremely important part of our curriculum. Every child has access to at least 2 hours of PE a week taught by our school staff. Our aim is to inspire all of our children to live a healthy and more active lifestyle. This is achieved both within the school day and through a range of after school clubs. Our lessons focus on mastering movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination. Pupils are encouraged to participate in team games and to develop simple tactics for being an effective team member. Outdoor PE lessons will be held on the field or MUGA and indoor PE lessons are held in our hall.
We believe it is important that every child has the opportunity to play sport competitively. Our school will develop links with other schools and allow teams to play against other local schools in tournaments and matches throughout the year.
Every summer we will hold a whole school Sports' Day, where all children are encouraged to take part and have fun. Sports day is a fantastic opportunity for parents to visit and see their children in action.
End of KS1 Expectations:
Pupils should develop core movement, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
End of KS2 Expectations:
Pupils should continue to implement and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
